Films can teach us so much about life and also about faith, particularly as we delve into them in a bit more detail. They don’t have to be overtly Christian to allow us to gain insights from them. The parables of Jesus didn’t mention God and didn’t have religious settings. Instead, Jesus took every day events of life and drew out lessons of faith, hope, love, sacrifice and other Christian values. So we can do the same with secular stories portrayed in films. These insights may not reveal themselves the first time we watch a film and it may take time to reflect on the story or even someone else to help us make the connections. Reading a film in the light of faith though, starts with having the eyes to see and the ears to hear.
This Lent we will have the opportunity to share together and think more deeply about what some films have to offer us. This will include watching the film together and then reflecting on it with each other. We have chosen two films which may be familiar to some but new to others. They are quite different in style but both offer us good opportunities for discussion. We will take one session to watch the film and then we will be given some questions to reflect on personally during the week in preparation for our discussion the following week.
