Parish Walk

11th September 2010

The forecast was for light showers but that didn’t deter the ten who set off for Wahoh Reservoir and Turton Tower on 11th September. Mind you, as we approached the start of the walk the heavens opened and we couldn’t see the tops of the surrounding hills. We were drenched just getting out of the car. Still, we were not going to be put off. Barbara managed a contortionist act putting on waterproofs in the back of the car, though why go to all that trouble to stay dry and then tip coffee all over yourself before getting out of the car?!

The walk took us down through the woods. When we came to a bridge Janet insisted on everyone playing pooh sticks, even though some of the group didn’t seem to know what that was. Most people collected their own stick, Ted just “stole” three quarters of Janet’s a split second before the word “go”! It didn’t matter, it was so dark and the stream was so fast that we didn’t see any of them come out the other side, so we declared it a draw.

It was a varied walk – along the reservoir, down through Turton Bottom, through the woods by a stream and over the hill to Turton Tower, where we were able to have our picnic. The last section of the walk took us along the ridge, the sun was out, the sky was blue and the view was fantastic. However, we only just got back to the car before the heavens opened again!
