5th Annual Conker Competition
Adverse weather meant that this major event had to be held in the church this year, rather than in the Vicarage garden. It was the day that Nev Rolle was visiting Christ the Servant and we insisted that she joined in the competition, even though she had never heard of the game of conkers! She had had a 5 minute lesson in how to play the day before at the vicarage.
The Health & Safety Executive might have frowned upon the opening round, with so many people playing at the same time all in the community room at CTS. The Vicar almost gained a black eye from one conker!
Nev made it in to the second round and was drawn against Philip Woods. Their game went on for ever and Nev was beginning to wilt. In the end she was beaten by Philip, who made it into the final in true Woods style. (If you haven’t been following the last four years the Woods family are overall champions, having won three of the four competitions so far). However, Hannah Givens wasn’t going to give way to a younger member and very quickly completed the game to become the 2011 Champion. We understand that the trophy is now proudly displayed in her room at University.
Well done to all who took part, especially Nev. Perhaps the game of conkers will make its way back to St Andrew’s Exuma, although they will have to find an alternative type of “conker”.
