Introducing Posada
Posada is an old Mexican tradition where young people dressed up as Mary and Joseph travelled from house to house asking for a room for the night and telling people about the imminent arrival of Jesus in the weeks leading up to Christmas. On Christmas Eve they would visit the local church to re-enact the nativity and place the figures of Mary and Joseph in the crib.
Modern day Posada uses nativity figures of Mary & Joseph who travel from place to place during Advent. This gives each “host” the chance to create their own celebration in their home or place in the community, making room for Jesus in their lives. It is a good opportunity to share the real meaning of Christmas with others.
At Christ the Servant we have chosen to run our own Posada journey this year. Two knitted figures of Mary & Joseph will make their journey around our parish from Advent Sunday on 27th November, stopping at a different place each night until they are brought to the Crib service at 4pm on Christmas Eve. As the hosts meet to give and receive the figures they join in a short time of prayer with each other. It is also an opportunity to invite friends and family to join in.
We hope that Mary & Joseph’s journey around Digmoor and Up Holland will be a smooth one and we look forward to hearing some of the stories of their journey. They will arrive at Christ the Servant for:-
Carols, Crib and Christmas Cake
