2009 Conker Championships

Sunday 11th October 2009.

“Tradition” (well, the last two years anyway) dictates that the second Sunday in October is not only Harvest Festival at Christ the Servant Church but also the Vicarage Garden Party and Annual Conker Competition. So, 11th October saw the 3rd annual conker championship.

The weather forecast on the day was not good and it was raining in the morning. An announcement was made in church that the event would go ahead in doors if raining but that would mean no conkers! But, we’re a hardy lot at Christ the Servant and ten minutes later it had been decided that the conker competition was vital and would go ahead whether or not it was raining … people would just provide gazebos!

The shear determination obviously had an effect on the weather causing the rain to stop and it brightened up in the afternoon. The 3rd annual championship got underway and there was a lot at stake. The Woods family had won for the previous two years, Kathryn in 2007 and Alison in 2008. Twenty-two people took part in the championship this year, with thirteen other spectators. Competition was “fierce” (of course, it is only a game!).

At one point it looked like it would be an all Woods final but Stephanie beat Kieran after a hard semi-final to make it into the final against Paul. Quite a crowd was gathered round and the winner was …. Paul WOODS!!! Unbelievable!

What will happen at the 4th annual conker championship in 2010? Will the Woods family win again? (No pressure Kieran and Phillip!) Make a note of the date now, Sunday 10th October 2 – 4pm.

It was good fun!
